The first ever Nippon Kempo association (Nippon Kempo KAI) was based in Osaka, and was established in 1947 by Master Muneumi Sawayama himself. We must remark that at the time of this writing we do not have up-to-date information, and we must report that all links to postal addresses, e-mail addresses, and web site have quite apparently become invalid. Nippon Kempo RENMEI is an association based in Sendai, was established in more recent times, and is today the largest Japanese organization. This organization concerns itself with Nippon Kempo practice and competition in the Japanese school system - from elementary grades to universities. This organization has published and adopted more restrictive competition rules that do not differ greatly from the standards but are considered safer for children and younger students. Also, in a departure from tradition, contests are judged by two referees (Main Referee and Secondary Referee). This is often referred to as the Eastern Japanese Nippon Kempo federation.
Nippon Kempo KYOKAY is based in Tokyo, it was established in 1955 to maintain and support the traditional interpretation of Nippon Kempo. Although it has a strong presence in the school system, it mainly concerns itself with the promotion of professional competitions and events, and with the continuous promotion and support of Nippon Kempo for those individual that cannot consistently train and compete because of work, family, or other obligations.
